In October 2005, my friends Carrie, Greg, Kim, and I took a trip Las Vegas for the inaugural Vegoose music festival. The names you see around the border of this page are just some of the names who played at Vegoose. Search around this page and the links to get a chronology of our activities.Phil Lesh & Friends

I arrived in Las Vegas on October 28 to be picked up by Carrie and her Uncle Carl. Carrie's Uncle Carl and Aunt Lorette live just outside of town. After being picked up, we proceeded back to their house to prepare for our touristy day. After a quick breakfast at the Omelet House, we proceeded to Red Rock Canyon, a world famous rock-climbing destination. We wouldn't be doing any rock climbing during this trip, but the drive was great. The geology of Red Rock Canyon is that of an ancient sea and beach where sand dunes were formed during the Cretaceous-age. The crossbedding is amazing of the sandstones. Another thing Red Rock Canyon is famous for is the Keystone Thrust, a Laramide orogeny feature where Precambrian-aged rocks lie atop younger strata. For a geologist, I was in heaven. After our Red Rock trip we proceeded to Lake Las Vegas, a huge reservoir on the northeast side of town. After the lake and a nap, we all went out to dinner a fine establishment called Hugo's Cellar in old-town Las Vegas. By the time dinner was over, Greg and Kim had arrived in town and Carrie and I left to meet up with them. I had a great day in the 'less-visited' places in Las Vegas and hope to see these areas again. Click here to see pictures from this portion of the trip. The Arcade

By the time we met up with Greg and Kim at their hotel it was nearing 11 PM and it was time to get down to business. We proceeded to Coyote Ugly bar inside New York New York. What a pile of crap that place was. Bastards got my ten dollars, too. After a bust at Coyote Ugly, we walked around the strip and finally ended up at MGM Grand. After a pretty long day of touring with Carrie's fam, we decided to all turn in so that we wouldn't be too tired for the first day of Vegoose the next morning. Of course, by this time it was nearing 4 AM. Thankfully, we're young. The Flaming

Vegoose Day 1 - We arrive at the complex around noon to see our first band, String Cheese Incident. There were four stages set up at Vegoose. The main stage was inside a college football stadium. The remaining three were out in a 30-acre grass field just behind the football stadium. After watching SCI, we proceeded to the outside stages to watch Gov't Mult, The Shins, Primus, and Beck. After seeing a little bit of each of these bands and cruising around the scene for a while, we proceeded back inside the football stadium to see Dave Matthews and Friends. On this night, Dave's friends were Trey Anastasio and Tim Reynolds. Dave and Friends was really good, but Primus was by far the best of the first day.The Shins

After leaving the first day of Vegoose and having a not-very-good cab experience, we finally made it back to the strip for a little partying. After cleaning up, the four of us proceeded to Paris. We met up with Greg's brother Chris and his girlfriend Julie, who were also in town for Vegoose. We manage to sit there for about 3 hours drinking and shooting the breeze. A perfect ending to a great day and we were all looking forward to Vegoose Day 2. Click here to see the pictures from our nights about Las Vegas.moe.

Vegoose Day 2 - Waking up the next morning was not that easy. Plus, we had to get our costumes ready. I had chosen to go as Dr. Peter Venkman of Ghostbusters fame. Carrie was the bad Catholic school girl, Ms. Carrie Catherine. After meeting up with Greg (as pimp) and Kim (as fairy), we proceeded to the second day of music. The first band that we saw was Michael Franti and Spearhead. Despite his propensity for saying, "How you feelin!," Michael Franti was extremely entertaining. After Spearhead on the main stage, we proceeded to the outer stages for Ween and moe. After Ween, we all proceeded back inside for the two main attractions (IMHO) of the entire festival, Trey Anastasio and Widespread Panic.Talib Kweli

Day 2 (cont.) - Trey played first. Our group got up near the ninth row for Trey and had plenty of room to groove. Trey's set was sick. I like his new band, 70 Volt Parade. Two videos from Trey's set are below. After Trey, we moved up to around the fifth row for Greg and Kim's favorite band, Widespread. Their set was awesome too. At one point, Trey came out and jammed for three songs. Widespread played for about 3 hours with another special guest for a few songs, the Colonel Bruce Hampton. At the end of the three hours, Widespread was done and Vegoose was over before we knew it. All the photos from our two days at Vegoose can be accessed here.Blackalicious
